Homeopathic Remedies Trigger the Body to Heal Itself

By Mark Zuleger-Thyss/Garden of Healing

Homeopathic medicine is inexpensive, highly effective, and has successfully treated patients for over 200 years.

Homeopathy is not a blanket term for all alternative and complementary medical fields. It refers specifically to a branch of medicine founded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) at the end of the eighteenth century. Hahnemann was frustrated by his time's medical system, believing that its cures were crude and some of its potent drugs and treatments did more harm than good to patients.

Based on the Law of Similars, Hahnemann founded homeopathic medicine on the principle that likes will cure likes. Rather than suppressing symptoms, such as food poisoning, homeopathy triggers the body into healing itself.

The average person might not be able to follow the logic behind this type of natural medicine. While the exact mechanism behind how it works is a matter of debate in some circles, homeopathy works and is here to stay. There are over 200,000 registered homeopathic doctors currently, with approximately 12,000 more being added every year.

Homeopathy is generally a safe treatment, as it uses natural substances in greatly diluted quantities. Its non-toxicity makes it the right choice for the treatment of children. Hahnemann formulated the Law of the Infinitesimal Dose (The more diluted a remedy is, the more potent it is.) Homeopathic remedies stimulate the body's natural healing processes. These minuscule doses cause the same symptoms one is trying to cure in more significant amounts. This means that any substance that produces specific symptoms in a healthy person can cure similar symptoms in a sick person.

Typical homeopathic remedies come in the form of little sugar pills that dissolve quickly under the tongue or can be dissolved in small amounts of water, then given orally. The actual tablets or pellets come in small vials.

When shopping for homeopathic formulas, look for remedies that most closely describe your specific symptoms.

Homeopathy, as a system of medicine, has gone through several phases in its development. It was a revolution in medical thought and practice. Samuel Hahnemann rejected the allopathic attempt to find the cause of disease through dissection, chemical analysis, and endless theories. He ridiculed the allopathic battle cry, Tolle Causem or treat the cause. He asserted that one could only know disease through each sick person's full individual symptoms, the totality of symptoms. These were the language of the inner disturbance.

There are two significant branches of homeopathy: Classical and Constitutional.

In the application of constitutional homeopathy, the selected remedy may not address the chief complaint but will fit the patient's overall picture or constitution. Constitutional homeopathy emphasizes the individual, including the underlying psychological issues, motives, personality, and physical symptoms. Homeopaths base their remedy selections on the most distinct characteristics of the client's illness.

Classical Homeopathy is based on the principles set forth by Samuel Hahnemann in his treatise, The Organon of the Medical Art. The most notable homeopathy principle is the law of similars. Dr. Hahnemann coined the term 'similia similibus curantur,' meaning let like be cured by like.

Homeopathy is considered an effective natural method to repel imbalance out of the body and allow it to heal. The wonder of homeopathic medicine is its safety, in the tiny amount of treatment needed, and in the speed of healing.
