Homemade applesauce is delightful, and it tastes even better with Elderberry syrup. This simple fall-inspired recipe is a way to incorporate elderberries into everyday foods. Homemade applesauce is super easy to make. Prepare ahead of time and freeze it for your kids. It is best served warm.
A serving of this recipe will not provide a therapeutic dose of elderberry. It will put this popular herbal medicine on your radar, though.
Herbalists rely on elderberries for their immunostimulant properties. They use them as a gentle preventative medicine and treatment for the common cold and flu. Elderberries contain anthocyanidins, chemical compounds that fire up the immune system.
Elderberry wards off sinus infections and inflammation that can cause seasonal allergy symptoms. The high levels of flavonoids in these purple berries might have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Some believe these deactivate the flu virus by inhibiting its ability to penetrate the cells and replicate.
Ingredients:
- 3 pounds organic tart apples, peeled, cored, and chopped
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup Elderberry syrup
Preparation:
1) Place a large pot over medium heat
2) Add the organic apples and cinnamon spice, along with 1 cup filtered water
3) Heat uncovered until the apples start simmering. Cover pot and reduce heat to medium-low
4) Cook, stirring often. Use a wooden spoon to break down some of the apples. Continue cooking for 30 minutes, until apples are tender but still chunky
5) Remove from heat and stir in Elderberry syrup
Puree if desired. Allow to cool and transfer to glass jars. Refrigerate for up to one week.
